Part 2: Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition, and Rest and Recovery

#28 Tip | Strength and Conditioning

“It can be hard to find time for strength and conditioning with short practices, whether you’re a high school coach or a club coach when there is a limited amount of time with our teams. One way to make sure we are getting this important component in is making it as part of our practices. Adding in footwork with a ladder (link ladder), abs or band exercises as a warmup to your practice can be an effective way to do this. We do not need to be adding a ton of weight on our athletes backs, we just need to make sure we attack the important parts of the game which are fast twitch muscles, jumping, and physical therapy to ensure that the joints and ligaments are strengthened. ” – Juliann Faucette Johnson, BSN SPORTS Volleyball Brand Ambassador

#43  Tip | Nutrition

“One of the most important things we can teach our athletes is how to fuel their bodies for performance. Whether it is for practice or a match picking the right food is key. Combining a carbohydrate with a protein is a great way to balance. Blood sugar levels while making sure you get the energy needed. Combo’s like banana and peanut butter, or an apple with a handful of almonds, or a protein shake can be easy and effective ways to fuel up”– Juliann Faucette Johnson, BSN SPORTS Volleyball Brand Ambassador

#21  Tip | Rest and Recovery

“Incorporating rest into your program can be hard with limited time you have with your team, but rest is vital to making sure your team can recover and play their best throughout the season. Here are some ways to make sure you are maximizing your time while still giving your team ample rest. One jump less, use boxes to work on our swings, do a serve and pass practice or work on individual skills. Two, dedicate half of a practice to a good stretch and cool down and encourage your team to get treatment and ice afterwards. These can-do wonders to your team both mentally and physically and help you get back on track especially mid-season.” -Juliann Faucette Johnson, BSN SPORTS Volleyball Brand Ambassador
