“Talent wins games, but teamwork wins championships.” – Michael Jordan

He wasn’t a volleyball player, but Michael Jordan was spot-on with this quote.

After spending over a decade playing competitive volleyball – from high school and club, to collegiately at the University of Texas, to several years overseas – I’ve seen this quote hold true with teams of various ages AND cultures.

It doesn’t matter how talented the individuals on your team are collectively; if the chemistry is lacking, the wins are much harder to come by.

I recently led a live webinar titled Practice Planning & Team Building. In the webinar, I covered topics such as example practice plans and the skills vs. drills argument, conducting a personality test, and team building. I also did a question-and-answer segment toward the end with live viewers, many of whom were coaches.

Team Pictionary

Pictionary is one of my favorite games when it comes to team bonding.

Whether it’s talking about what you’re proud of, what you bring to the group, frustrations, or anything else, covering these topics through a fun, interactive game is a great way to help your players grow closer.

Additional Team-Bonding Activities

There are dozens of team-bonding activities coaches can experiment with. In fact, we at BSN SPORTS recently worked with the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) and women’s sports icon Nancy Lieberman to conduct a survey so we could see what their favorite activities are.

The top vote-getters were:

  • Team meals
  • Workouts
  • Community Service
  • Holiday Gift Exchanges
